U15 win Southwest battle.

Heathcoat cricket club U15s have just won the next stage of the Portman cup against Cornish Champions Troon. In near perfect conditions at Knightshayes Troon won the toss and elected to bat. The openers struggled against accurate bowling from Shane Evenden and skipper Will Denford who restricted the run rate to less than two an over. Eventually the pressure told and after ten overs the first change pair of Sam Smith and Justin Williams were introduced and began to take wickets .Opener Treganza was dismissed for a creditable 34 but by the fifteenth over the damage was done and cavalier batting saw the dismissal of Angove and Williams. Tom Boxall was then introduced into the bowling attack and in a devastating spell took 2-7 in his four overs to see the Troon innings close on a meagre 62-5. The fielding of the Heathcoat team had been exemplary.

The Heathcoat innings was shaky at the start with Denford going cheaply to an excellent ball from Johnson. Sam Smith then came to the crease and, as has been the case in other matches steadied the ship. Evenden was out for 14 and with Justin Williams in the middle he and Smith reached the target with comparative ease.

The Heathcoat outfit will now travel to Bath in early August to decide the West winners in the final stages of the cup

Portman Cup Devon Final

Heathcoat cricket club U15 s have just powered their way to victory in the Devon section of the National Portman Cup.

Having won the toss Heathcoat Captain, Will Denford, elected to bat. In perfect early evening conditions he and fellow opener Shane Evenden set the tone with a well balanced opening stand of fifty before Denford was caught for 23. Sam Smith then arrived at the crease and in a devastating display of attacking cricket scored 26 in one over hitting five fours and a six. He continued until he was also caught having scored 37 off just 18 balls. Evenden closely followed having scored 23 but steady batting from Hugh Mc Dowell and George Wheatley kept the score board ticking. When Mc Dowell was out for 13 the score looked a little thin but Jake Crouch entered the fray and with some big hitting managed to score 21 not out with two huge sixes in the final over. This left Heathcoat on 148-6 off their 20 overs.

The reply from Dartington and Totnes was well measured and after eight overs they were ahead of the run rate. Opener Matt Hickey was well supported by Ryan Stephenson as they passed 40 runs for the loss of one wicket. Hugh Mc Dowell was then called upon to bowl and in his first over took two wickets for just one run. This put great pressure on the batsmen as the run rate began to grow. Further tight bowling saw George Wheatley capture the scalp of Hickey for a valiant 48. Justin Williams, who had failed with the bat, was then asked to bowl and bowling spin he devastated the tail end capturing 4 wickets for just six runs to leave Dartington and Totnes on 84 all out. Interestingly all of the Dartington and Totnes batsmen were bowled. Team Manager Mike Denford said that he was delighted with the whole teams’ performance and complimented them on some excellent cricket especially in the field.

Matt Theedom the Devon Development officer presented the Cup and Medals to the Heathcoat players and praised the Dartington and Totnes team for their fortitude. The Heathcoat team will now play the Cornish Champions at Knightshayes at a date to be announced.
